PROBLEM STATEMENT OF PROJECT HAVEN
If we wanted to conduct research on the effects of domestic violence and gender-based discrimination on human health, we would first have to identify what qualifies as domestic abuse and gender-based discrimination.
Domestic violence is often used as a synonym for intimate partner violence, which is committed by one partner in an intimate relationship against the other. It can occur in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, and even between former spouses or partners.
Gender discrimination is the unequal treatment of individuals based on their gender. Women are most commonly affected, experiencing disadvantages in:
- Education
- Career opportunities
- Economic advancement
- Political participation
This type of discrimination occurs across the globe — including in developed countries. Recognizing these facts helps us understand that women are predominantly the victims of both domestic violence and gender-based discrimination
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Project Haven is a project designed to create awareness, organize workshops, and provide a shelter for women who are victims of gender-based violence and inequality.
Our goal is to create a world where women have social protection, especially against gender-based violence.
In many patriarchal societies, marriage is portrayed as a woman’s ultimate life goal, making the marital home the only space that is considered “hers.” But when a woman is unsafe in her own home, where can she go?
According to our research in Ghana and Sierra Leone, the main reason women remain in abusive relationships is the lack of a safe space for survivors of domestic violence.
With Project Haven, by the year 2035, we aim to build a shelter home in both Ghana and Sierra Leone that guarantees:
- Mental health support
- Physical safety
- Legal assistance
- Financial empowerment Emotional support
Our long-term mission is to ensure that every woman facing domestic violence has access to protection, dignity, and a safe path forward
